Unfortunately it has been that way since the dawn of civilization. My
point was probably more along the lines of; Roger Water's music can be
quite depressing. Some would say this is 'reality'. I say that there
are also good things in this life. CB
Well, I do agree with you there, Chuck, and so does Roger Waters,
if you listen to his interview on that ITF DVD. He admits, perhaps
from the point of view of 60 yrs. of maturity, that the Wall was
"a bit whinging". Depressing it is, and reality it is as well.
But I guess each man has his own means to
assuage his guilt at success. For Roger Waters, it's a lifetime
of protest and antiwar music which isn't such a bad way to go
considering what it really must be like growing up knowing your
father died in a totally unnecessary action ordered by
generals with the bravery of being out of range.
So many people call him a whiner about war but the truth is, it is
an appalling thought to imagine a childhood (if you really
take the time to imagine it in detail) and especially
an adolescence without a father for *that* particular reason.
Of course, many reasons are appalling for a child to grow
up without a father, but when you can pin it on your own
government like that, who can blame him for lyrics like
"Maggie What Have You Done"? Who wouldn't hate
the system passionately for taking the most important
thing in his life away before he even had a chance to
get to know him? I think he has good reason to be
obsessed about war, and godspeed to his efforts to
prevent any more children being raised fatherless.
If only he could still write good music. Perhaps he
might switch to poetry?! 8^P
