Syd Barrett auction
(Tuesday August 22, 2006 02:05 PM)

The final possessions of Syd Barrett are to be auctioned in Cambridge later
this year, it has been announced.

Amongst the items set to go under the hammer are pieces of artwork from the
Pink Floyd founder, some signed, which have never been seen before.

Also up for sale are his bikes, which were hand painted by the former star,
who lived out much of the last 30 years of his life as a recluse.

In a statement, Cheffins Auctioneers commented: "The auction will consist of
items left by Syd in his Cambridge house. Syd spent his last years living a
quiet, yet content life in Cambridge.

"Both his bikes, which he had used every day in Cambridge for visits to the
local shops and pub were hand painted by Syd and will be included in this
sale as will several pieces of furniture which Syd customised or made
himself.

"He was passionate about, although not always competent at, DIY. Other items
will include the easel, paints and paint table which Syd used regularly to
paint.

"History of art and art were his great loves and this is seen in his
artwork, his library and his writings, some of which were to be the
foundations of an Art History book Syd wanted to write.

"The sale will also include other lots of various books, homemade speakers
and a classical guitar."

The auction tales place at Cheffins Auctioneers fine art sale on November 29
and 30.

God, I wonder what would have happened if Janis Joplin-Jimi Hendrix, or
Jim Morrison's relatives or community peoples had organized a giant
"Auction"~I'm sure it was done for John Lennon; and/or other great and
shining *stars* that's passed. As a vintage vinyl collector, I DID
manage to get my hands on an old Frank ZAPPA~vinyl with some wild
psychedelic art-work~ dang, if that didn't blow my mind, to have that
piece of history on Vinyl and the Title: We're Only In IT For The
Money. Great Album~Zappa at best! I've already gotten a few rare Syd
painted postcards~and know that he'll be remembered fondly in the
hearts and souls of those who loved his genius and his madness that
recreated the average or typical OTHER MUSIC, if you will. Syd tripped
out on regular things and turned them into the spectacular~and the
randomness of his sound, the NOISE and that CACOPHANY led may into the
fold of Psychedelica. He just didn't TAKE CARE of himself...and my
late husband who worked sound for many psychedelic bands in the late
60's 70/'s and early 80's~took me to CAMBS where i meet some of the
PF-folk. But I wasn't a die-hard fan; and tommy was merely a
Tech-Support on one of their Tours.

He's on an old Vinyl of Gilmour's called WORKS; that straggly,
down-cast dude walking with his head down, leaving only foot-prints in
the sand. I think that Vinyl is not available anymore. If anyone HAS
a copy of the old Vinyl of DG's Vinyl-album titled, WORKS; I'd pay for
that dearly. Tommy's stuff got taken (even his home-made wooden guitar
w/ the best pick-ups) to a Pawn-Shop...a tragedy.
I think that Thomas DID smoke a joint with SYD and actually had a few
great conversations with the lad. Tommy could trip out with anyone;
and did so with the Carlos Castenada set back when. He was a Bluesman
and a kool kat....so there are now 2-CRAZEE diamonds up there jammin'
in SPACE, floating above the stars, above Arnold Layne, and certainly
beyond Lucifer SAM.
